Chairman of Tatarstan State Council Farid Mukhametshin: The Tatar language as the official language of the republic will be studied at schools

29 November 2017, Wednesday

On November 29, speaking at the 33rd session of the regional parliament, Chairman of Tatarstan State Council Farid Mukhametshin said that the Tatar language as the official language of the republic will be studied at schools.

The local State Council discussed the issue of teaching and studying the official languages of the republic and the native languages of the peoples living in Tatarstan.

According to Mukhametshin, a letter received from the Minister of Education and Science of Russia Olga Vasilieva on the 28th of November in a response to an appeal by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov suggests curricula that provide for the study of the official language of the republics of Russia, where the official language of the constituent entity of the Federation is established by law.

The head of the Tatarstan parliament noted that much work has been done on the issue the public is concerned about. "A common understanding has been found with colleagues from the Federal Ministry of Education and Science. Now there is a lot of work to do to adapt school curricula to include two academic hours of the study of the Tatar language into them,” Mukhametshin said in his speech.

According to him, a set of measures, including making changes to Tatar language syllabi, updating educational literature, methodological documents, and retraining personnel needs to be done.

Mukhametshin said that he believes that further postponement of this issue, as well as any discussions, create tension among teachers, parents and children. Therefore, it was decided to hold the meeting on the language issue without opening discussions and putting questions on the matter.

He said that the Tatarstan State Council’s Committee on Education, Culture, Science and National Issues will keep this issue under control and will revert to discussion from time to time.

The people’s deputies passed a resolution according to which the Ministry of Education and Science of the republic was offered to take measures to organize the educational process in state and municipal educational institutions of the republic in accordance with the curricula suggested by the federal ministry.
