New runaway opened at International airport “Kazan”

Official opening of a new runaway and reconstructed passenger platform was held at the International airport “Kazan” on June 20.

The reconstruction works started in 2011 within the framework of preparation for summer Universiade. The funding of 4,5 bln rubles was provided under the federal programme “Development of Russian transport system in 2010-2020”.

The old runaway is now 3750 metres long and 60 metres wide and accepts the biggest aircrafts.

The passenger platform has been considerably widened. Its area now makes 164 m².

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov said that the airport modernization is nearly completed. He continued that the new terminal 1A and the Intermodal transport line had been constructed during the programme implementation.

Rustam Minnikhanov thanked the Russian Government and Ministry of Transport for permitting airport reconstruction before Universiade. He especially thanked the Federal Air Transport Agency, designers and builders.

Deputy Head of the Federal Air Transport Agency Konstantin Makhov congratulated everyone on the event: “We have finally seen real “gates of Tatarstan capital”. The airport meets up-to-date requirements and can accept aircrafts of all types.”

In his interview Tatarstan Minister of Transport and Roads Lenar Safin said that the airport master plan presupposes construction of two more terminals enabling acceptance rate of 5-6 mln passengers per year.
