On July 18, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, State Counsellor Mintimer Shaimiev, Russian Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko, and President of International Fencing Federation Alisher Usmanov took part in opening ceremony of World Fencing Championship at Kazan Tennis Academy.
To the point, 800 sportsmen from 101 countries will take part in the event.
The opening ceremony began with the parade of sportsmen. Afterwards, Vitaly Mutko read out greetings of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, in his turn, thanked event managers for holding World Fencing Championship in Kazan, and guests for visiting Kazan.
“A year ago we hosted summer Universiade, this year we are hosting World Fencing Championship, and in 2015 we will host World Aquatics Championship. I believe more major competitions will be held in Kazan, and best sportsmen from many countries will take part in these events. We hope you will like our city and our country, and we would like to show you our national peculiarities,” Rustam Minnikhanov addressed the audience.
President of International Fencing Federation Alisher Usmanov wished sportsmen and coaches good luck and countries participating in the championship - development of fencing sport. He announced opening of the competitions.
During today’s competitions Mintimer Shaimiev and Alisher Usmanov presented awards to the winners. The Russian fencer Nikolay Kovalev became the world champion.
Finals in personal and team disciplines will be held at Tennis Academy within the next six days. The closing ceremony is planned for July 23.
On 8 May, speaking at a meeting held by the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov in the Government House of the republic with participation of the Acting Chairman of the State Council of the republic Marat Akhmetov and the regional Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin, the Minister of Construction, Architecture and Housing Utilities Sector of the republic Marat Ayzatullin reported that capital overhaul of social facilities is in full swing in the republic with 170 educational facilities having been included into regional and federal programmes.
On 4 May at a briefing held in the Tatarstan Government House it was told that currently there are 92 combat veterans, the last witnesses of the Great Patriotic War (WW II) of 1941-1945, living in the republic. The briefing also informed about veterans’ support measures and how the republic is planning to celebrate the Victory Day on 9 May.
The Deputy Prime Minister of the republic Leyla Fazleeva told that names of 353 Heroes of the Soviet Union from Tatarstan “ are immortalized in street names, on memorials, in monuments and squares and, of course, in our memory”. “The Victory Day is the day of memory, mourning and joy. It is the event which today should be clearly understandable to all young people and younger generation of Tatarstan,” she said.

On 24 April in the Government House of the republic, Tatarstan Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin held a joint meeting the Council for Enforcement of Legislation of Languages of Tatarstan and the organizational committee for celebrations of the 140th birthday of Gabdulla Tukay which summarized results of work of the regional law enforcement on official languages of the republic and considered progress of the implementation of the plan of main events for preparation and celebration of the 140th birthday of Gabdulla Tukay .
