On December 8, during his working trip to Qatar Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov visited Education City, which is an initiative of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.
Located on the outskirts of Doha, Education City covers 14 square kilometers and houses educational facilities from school age to research level and branch campuses of some of the world's universities.
During a presentation, Minnikhanov was told in more details about the special zone activity. It was noted that it also serves as a platform where science meets business, and where appropriate contacts for the use of scientific achievements for the development of private and public sectors are established.
Education City was launched by Qatar Foundation in 1997. The same year, Virginia Commonwealth University became the first institute to establish itself on its campus. The city was officially inaugurated in 2003.
Today Education City has branches of American, British and French universities. It also has the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies and Qatari Academy (for school children).
After the presentation, Minnikhanov and members of Tatarstan delegation asked some questions relating to the financing of this project, work with students, solving various logistical and transport issues and so forth.
