Tatarstan President visits Irkutsk Sloboda historic area in Irkutsk

On August 26, during his working visit to Irkutsk, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov accompanied by the Governor of Irkutsk region Sergey Levchencko visited the Irkutsk Sloboda, an area of historic buildings.

The Irkutsk Sloboda (the 130th District) is a complex of architectural and historical monuments of the city. A total of 400 residents of the district were relocated from dilapidated houses before restoration works that started in 2010. Minnikhanov was informed that there were 72 buildings in the area, 90 per cent of which were dilapidated.

Today the centre of the capital features a well-organized territory with beautiful historic mansion houses, museums, restaurants and well-developed infrastructure.

Minnikhanov noted that Tatarstan has also gained great experience in the restoration of cultural, historical and spiritual monuments, the protection of cultural heritage. He said that three sites located in the republic are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the Kazan Kremlin, the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex, the Dormition Cathedral and the Monastery of the island-town of Sviyazhsk. A large-scale work is underway to restore architectural monuments in Kazan and improve historic neighborhoods in Zelenodolsk town and other cities of the republic, he continued.

Tatarstan President suggested holding a seminar on the exchange of experience in the field of restoration of architectural monuments with the participation of Tatarstan and Irkutsk specialists in the near future.
