25 November 2017, Saturday

On November 24, Tatarstan Prime Minister Alexey Pesoshin took part in the opening of the International Water Polo Tournament among old stager teams from Kazan, Volgograd, Kazakhstan and Saint Petersburg in memory of Lieutenant-General Alexander Antonov.

Antonov, who headed the regional Office of the Federal Security Service of Russia since 2011, was tragically killed in a plane crash in Kazan on November 17, 2013. Last year, the water polo tournament was held for the first time in the capital of Tatarstan among old stagers to commemorate his memory.

"Alexander Antonov made a great contribution to providing security both in the daily life of the republic and during large-scale international sports competitions," Pesoshin said, opening the tournament. "He was also an excellent athlete who played water polo being a student of the Moscow State University,” he added.

According to Pesoshin, the tournament is "an excellent opportunity for children to become acquainted with water polo and learn from the masters." Spectators will see an exciting game and get great impressions. He thanked the teams who came to Kazan to participate in the tournament.
