Ildar Khalikov visits research organisation MaRS Discovery District in Toronto

On March 14 during his working trip to Canada (March 11-13), Tatarstan Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov visited MaRS Discovery District in Toronto.
MaRS Discovery District is a non-profit research corporation located in Discovery district in Toronto, adjacent to the University of Toronto, Queen’s park and Front Campus. Founded in 2000, the organisation is successfully working due to public and private funding. MaRS Discovery District conducts medical and IT researches. The centre consists of several modern buildings. Its laboratories are fitted with state-of-the-art equipment.
Welcoming the audience, Company’s Director for International Relations Earl Miller said that it was the honour for him to receive Tatarstan delegation, and noted high achievements of the republic in educational sphere.
Telling about the history of MaRS Discovery District, Earl Miller said that the company is located in a historic building built in 1910-1913. Here Frederick Banting and John Macleod discovered insulin and they were awarded the Noble Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1923.
Canadian Government and the Ministry of Economic Development, Innovations and Export are partners of MaRS Discovery District. Total amount of investments made 750 million Canadian dollars, and 3,700 jobs were provided in 2013.
Earl Miller also told that the greater part of investments is private.
Members of Tatarstan delegation looked around laboratories, where medical research is carried out, and MaRS Commons, a part of MaRS Discovery District, dealing with information technologies.
Summing up, Ildar Khalikov called MaRS Discovery District a unique project, facilitating implementation of venture ideas.
On 15 December, speaking at a meeting of the competition committee of the regional public competition “The Manager of the Year” about its results in 2025, Tatarstan Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin said that the list of 155 participants (nominees), who are heads of enterprises and organizations from various industries and sectors of the economy, for the competition was formed based on recommendations from regional ministries and departments, city and district municipalities, employers' associations and the Federation of Trade Unions of the republic.
On 6 December speaking at a regional meeting held by the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov in the Government House of the republic with all municipalities taking part in it via videoconference, the regional Minister of Construction, Architecture and Housing Utilities Sector Marat Ayzatullin reported about progress in implementation of the of multi-apartment houses capital overhaul programme.
On 5 December, congratulating volunteers with the International Volunteers Day, Tatarstan Deputy Prime Minister Leyla Fazleeva wrote in her address: “
Your boundless kindness, sincere desire to help others and active civic position deserve special recognition and deep gratitude. There are over 5,000 volunteer associations operating successfully in Tatarstan, with a total membership of over 220,000 caring people of all ages and professions. Every year the contribution of volunteers into public life of the republic becomes more noticeable.
On 4 December Tatarstan Deputy Prime Minister Shamil Gafarov, who is the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Cabinet of Ministers of the republic, took part in a strategic session on the establishment of an inter-university campus in the republic being held at the Kazan Aircraft University on 4-6 December with participation of more than 100 people and more than 40 experts in politics, economy, science, education and industry from all over Russia.
