On November 3, at a briefing on issues of ensuring safety in water areas in the freezing period, it was informed that 118 people died in lakes and rivers in Tatarstan this year. The situation is getting worse in this time of the year when rivers and lakes start freezing.
Deputy Head of Chief Department of Russian Ministry of emergency situations in Tatarstan, chief state inspector for small vessels Yuri Venediktov, and president of the Tatarstan Federation of sport fisherman Niyaz Akhmetov took part in the briefing.
According to Yuri Venediktov, because of the temperature fall, rivers and lakes start freezing and pose hazard to people’s life and health.
According to statistics, 10 people died in 13 accidents last winter, 13 people were rescued.
Yuri Venediktov reminded that the save ice thickness in lakes is 10 cm, in rivers – 15 cm. Also, a stable temperature of minus 15°C that remains for two weeks is needed for safe ice thickness. He added that the planned works will be carried out in two main ways: realization of preventive measures and daily patrolling of water areas.
