15 February 2017, Wednesday

On February 15, in his welcoming speech before the hickey match between Tatarstan veterans’ team and NHL team Philadelphia Flyers at the Kazan Palace of Sport, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov said that the visit of American hickey players can favour reapproachment of Russia and the United States.

“We are so glad to welcome our guests in Kazan. Russia and the United States are experiencing tough times. Your visit will be a step towards reapproachment between our countries. Such meetings will be regular and we are always glad to see you,” Rustam Minnikhanov said.

The captain of Philadelphia Flyers, two-time Stanley Cup champion Joe Watson thanked everyone for warm reception.

“We are very glad to be here and are willing to continue cooperating with Tatarstan in hockey. We will organize the exchanging of teams, first of all, children’s teams. In Tatarstan we feel like we are members of the royal family.  I used to play against the Russian team in 70s, but they were not as friendly that time as at this match,” Joe Watson said.
