Big international conference on issues of tolerance to be held in Kazan

The international conference on issues of interethnic relations is likely to be held in Kazan under the auspices of the European Jewish Congress.
Prospects of holding such an event have been discussed at a meeting of the Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov with President of the European Jewish Congress, co-chairman of the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation Vyacheslav Kantor and Chairman of the Committee of the Federation Council on international affairs Mikhail Margelov.
The Tatarstan Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov and vice Chairman of RT State Council Aleksandr Gusev attended the meeting in RT Government House.
Opening the event, the Tatarstan head informed that good relations among representatives of different ethnic groups have traditionally established in republic marking great contribution of the first RT President Mintimer Shaimiev.
According to Rustam Minnikhanov, holding big international conference on issues of tolerance will be useful for republic and will let saying that Kazan is the city where many nations co-exist peacefully.
Vyacheslav Kantor told that a set of issues will be discussed at the conference. Organizers would like to devote one session to preservation of national uniqueness of minor nations and sharing of civilized experience between the Tatars and the Jews. “Kazan is the very place for holding this conference,” Vyacheslav Kantor said.
Organizers are going to invite a large number of world-known experts, in particular ex-president of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
Chairman of the Committee of the Federation Council on international affairs Mikhail Margelov marked that he is interested in the conference as a member of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, and organizers can count on support of the assembly.
The parties agreed on creating a working group involved in setting the date of the conference, inviting guests and solving other organizational issues.
On 8 May, speaking at a meeting held by the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov in the Government House of the republic with participation of the Acting Chairman of the State Council of the republic Marat Akhmetov and the regional Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin, the Minister of Construction, Architecture and Housing Utilities Sector of the republic Marat Ayzatullin reported that capital overhaul of social facilities is in full swing in the republic with 170 educational facilities having been included into regional and federal programmes.
On 4 May at a briefing held in the Tatarstan Government House it was told that currently there are 92 combat veterans, the last witnesses of the Great Patriotic War (WW II) of 1941-1945, living in the republic. The briefing also informed about veterans’ support measures and how the republic is planning to celebrate the Victory Day on 9 May.
The Deputy Prime Minister of the republic Leyla Fazleeva told that names of 353 Heroes of the Soviet Union from Tatarstan “ are immortalized in street names, on memorials, in monuments and squares and, of course, in our memory”. “The Victory Day is the day of memory, mourning and joy. It is the event which today should be clearly understandable to all young people and younger generation of Tatarstan,” she said.

On 24 April in the Government House of the republic, Tatarstan Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin held a joint meeting the Council for Enforcement of Legislation of Languages of Tatarstan and the organizational committee for celebrations of the 140th birthday of Gabdulla Tukay which summarized results of work of the regional law enforcement on official languages of the republic and considered progress of the implementation of the plan of main events for preparation and celebration of the 140th birthday of Gabdulla Tukay .
