11 May 2014, Sunday

On May 11, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, who arrived in Kaliningrad on a two-day working visit (May 11-12, 2014), looked around the Catholic Cathedral Church in Kaliningrad.

Accompanied by the Governor of Kaliningrad region Nikolay Tsukanov, Rustam Minnikhanov walked around the island, where the church is located. The oldest Cathedral church of the former Konigsberg was built between 1297 -1302 at the site between the Pregel and Leba rivers. The church was burnt and rebuilt many times over the centuries. During 1941 - 1945, the building was severely damaged after an air raid, as well as fires. The interior was not preserved, and gravestones with epitaphs were preserved only partially. Despite its heavy damages, the cathedral is one of the oldest monuments of church architecture and has great architectural, artistic and historical value.

Later, Rustam Minnikhanov laid flowers to the tomb of the great philosopher and thinker Immanuel Kant, who was buried near the cathedral.

Then, Rustam Minnikhanov visited Svetlogorsk, situated 30 km far from Kaliningrad, where he got familiar with the tourism infrastructure of the region.
