According to the new legal act “On setting an experimental legal regulations in digital innovations and approval of the Program of legal regulations in operation of connected and automated vehicles” passed by the Russian Government and to be enforced in 20 days, the Innopolis unmanned taxi cabs will be able to run on a test basis without a testing engineer in the car.
In case of need the operator will connect remotely thus making Russia the third country in the world to launch the completely unmanned taxi cabs. The vehicles will also function as a full-fledged commercial service in Innopolis.
Yandex unmanned taxi cabs started being used in Innopolis in August 2018 and the Mayor of the city Ruslan Shagaleev said: “It is hard to imagine Innopolis without unmanned vehicles today. During 3.5 years test they proved their highest safety not causing any traffic accidents in the city which is very important for us as the city administration.
Giving his comments, the Tatarstan Deputy Prime Minister Roman Shaykhutdinov said: “It is very important that the area without legal limitation in the sphere of connected and automated vehicles will be established in Innopolis which is not just a platform for development software and information systems today but also a platform for testing technologies under actual usage conditions”.
